Minocqua Chain of Lakes

   The Minocqua Chain of Lakes is one of Wisconsin’s best‑known vacation chains, tying together six primary lakes and nearly 6,000 acres of water from Kawaguesaga on the west through Lake Minocqua to Tomahawk and Little Tomahawk on the southeast edge of town. The system forms the headwaters of the Tomahawk River and is part of the Upper Wisconsin River watershed, giving boaters a long, river‑like main corridor with numerous bays, islands, and side channels to explore. On the water, this chain is set up for both play and serious fishing. Tomahawk Lake alone covers about 3,462 acres, while Lake Minocqua and Kawaguesaga add more than 2,000 combined acres of mixed structure, from steep breaks and deep basins to weedy shorelines and island‑protected flats. Anglers target walleye, musky, bass, and panfish under a shared “Minocqua Chain” regulation set, and an ongoing cooperative rehabilitation project has focused on restoring a strong, self‑sustaining walleye population. Ski boats and pontoons roam between lakes, but you can still duck into quieter corners, smaller bays, and the chain’s two smallest lakes, Mud and Mid, when you want to escape the main‑channel traffic. The human side of the chain is just as important. Lake Minocqua wraps directly around the Island City’s downtown, so it is easy to boat up for shopping or a meal, watch water‑ski shows from the boat, or pull into multiple true lakeside establishments such as long‑running bar‑and‑grill decks overlooking the water. Resorts, condo complexes, marinas, and public launches on Minocqua, Kawaguesaga, and Tomahawk make access straightforward for visitors, while sandbars and island anchor spots provide classic summer gathering spots on hot afternoons. For many Northwoods visitors, a day spent cruising the Minocqua Chain—linking lakefront patios, scenic channels, and broad open water—is the defining Northwoods boating experience.
