Bald Eagles Feeding
Bald Eagles are magnificent birds and a staple to the Northwoods environment. Even though they are pretty common to the area they are still mesmerizing to watch soar through the skies or swoop down to pull a fish out of the lake. What's really incredible is getting to see them up close and the best time to do that is in the early spring. It's this time of year that the snow melts away and the frozen roadkill becomes a delicious meal for eagles still waiting for the ice to come off the lakes and their fishing season to begin. On a recent drive to Sayner, I saw 5 eagles feasting on different roadside carcases. At such a close distance you can see the detail of their white heads, their sharp yellow beaks, and their incredibly large talons. So if you have an appreciation for eagles come take a drive around the Northwoods for a chance to see the national bird up close.
